The Spero Project is composed of several unique programs, each with the focus of mobilizing the Church to know, love, and value under-resourced communities. One of Spero's key programs is: 

THE COMMON: Being a resource to the international refugee community of Oklahoma City by offering tangible support and meaningful relationships.

Refugees are individuals and families driven from their homes and communities by factors outside of their control—they are victims of violence, war or persecution due to their religious or political beliefs.

Once refugees have fled their homes for immediate safety, they must begin the process of finding a permanent solution. It is in this process that individuals and families can be resettled to Oklahoma City to become our new neighbors.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner on Refugees, refugees remain uprooted for an average of 17 years due to ongoing violence or fear of persecution if they return home. And only 1% of all displaced people in the world are ever given an opportunity to start a new life in a new country.  

Because of these statistics, we feel strongly the refugee community of Oklahoma City has a very special purpose in our city.  We don’t take this lightly and are committed to offering Biblical hospitality, true community, and a loving city to call home in the Name of Jesus. 

Refugee communities are resilient, passionate and full of beautiful tradition and culture. They are the very people from which we can gain wisdom and insight. But they are also in a new home, learning a new language, operating new systems and forming new foundations. It’s critical that the Church of Jesus welcome and support our new neighbors offering tangible assistance and meaningful relationships, loving our neighbors as ourselves.  The Common offers support that includes educational support, job placement assistance, mentoring, Pastoral care, and more.
